    Serial numbers vs lot numbers

    Both identify products, but at completely different resolutions. A serial number points to one individual item; a lot number points to everything made in the same run. Choosing the wrong one makes recalls expensive, warranties unenforceable and counterfeits invisible.

    Which one should you use?

    The practical question is not which identifier is better, but which risk you are managing: a process risk that affects a whole run, or a value risk that lives in the individual item.

    Use lot numbers when the batch is the unit of risk

    Food, chemicals, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals share process risk across a run. If a raw material is contaminated, every unit from that run is suspect, so tracking at batch level is both sufficient and cheap.

    Use serial numbers when the item is the unit of value

    Devices, luxury goods, spare parts and regulated products need per-item identity for warranty, ownership transfer, resale and targeted recalls. A batch code cannot answer 'is this specific unit genuine?'.

    Most regulated supply chains need both

    EU FMD, UDI for medical devices and the upcoming Digital Product Passport expect a serial for the item plus lot and expiry for the batch. The two are complementary, not alternatives.

    A serial number is only a number

    Printed or encoded as a QR code, a serial is public the moment the product ships. Anyone who photographs one can reprint it across an entire counterfeit run — and every copy verifies as valid.

    First-scan-wins logic breaks in the real world

    Systems that flag duplicates catch cloning only after the fact, and usually punish the honest buyer who scans second. It is a detection heuristic, not authentication.

    Lot numbers cannot authenticate anything

    A batch code is shared by design. It tells you when and where something was made, assuming the label is genuine — which is exactly what a counterfeiter controls.

    What is the difference between a serial number and a lot number?
    A serial number identifies one individual unit — no two products share it. A lot (or batch) number identifies a group of units produced together under the same conditions. Serial numbers support per-item traceability, ownership and authentication; lot numbers support quality control, expiry management and recalls.
    Can a product have both a serial number and a lot number?
    Yes, and in regulated industries it is usually required. GS1 standards, EU FMD, medical device UDI and the EU Digital Product Passport all expect a batch or lot identifier alongside a unique serial for the individual item.
    Is a lot number enough for traceability?
    For process-driven risks such as contamination or a bad raw-material delivery, lot-level traceability is usually sufficient and much cheaper. It is not sufficient when you need to prove ownership, honour a warranty on one unit, recall a subset of a batch, or verify authenticity.
    Do serial numbers stop counterfeiting?
    Not on their own. A printed serial or a static QR code is public data that can be copied onto an unlimited number of fakes, and each copy passes the same check as the original. Serialisation stops counterfeiting only when the serial is cryptographically bound to the physical item, as with TAGBASE NFC tags.
