Beyond Authentication: TAGBASE Support for NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper

More and more people who discover that TAGBASE supports NXP Semiconductors NTAG 424 DNA ask us the same question:

Does TAGBASE also support the NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper version?

The answer is yes.

TAGBASE supports not only the authentication capabilities of the standard NTAG 424 DNA, but also the physical seal detection provided by NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper.

What is NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper?

NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper combines secure NFC authentication with a physical tamper loop.

This conductive loop can be integrated into a label, closure or seal. Each time someone taps the NFC tag, the tag checks the loop to determine whether the product is still sealed, has been opened or was opened and subsequently resealed.

This allows a single smartphone tap to answer two separate questions:

  1. Is this the genuine NFC tag associated with the product?
  2. What is the current and historical condition of the physical seal?

The result is a secure connection between a product’s digital identity and the physical integrity of its packaging.

Where can TagTamper be used?

TagTamper is valuable wherever a product, package or container is expected to remain sealed until it reaches an authorized person or the final customer.

Potential applications include:

  • Cosmetics and personal-care products
  • Pharmaceuticals and medical products
  • Food and beverage packaging
  • Wine and spirits
  • Chemicals
  • Luxury goods
  • Spare parts and industrial components
  • Logistics and shipping containers
  • Security bags and document envelopes
  • Bottle, packaging and container seals

A pharmaceutical product, for example, can be authenticated before use while also showing whether its packaging has previously been opened. A container seal can provide a secure digital identity while reporting its physical condition. A cosmetics brand can allow customers to verify both the origin and integrity of a product before using it.

Four possible seal readings

Every verification of a supported tamper-seal tag can return a tamper_status alongside the normal authentication verdict.

TAGBASE supports four possible readings:

  • sealed — The seal is intact and the product has not been opened.
  • resealed — The seal was opened at some point and is now closed again.
  • open — The seal is currently broken and the product has been opened.
  • invalid — The NFC tag was unable to read the seal correctly.

Authenticity and seal condition are separate signals

An important aspect of the TAGBASE implementation is that the seal reading is independent of the tag’s authentication status.

A tag can verify as valid while reporting a tamper status of open. This does not necessarily mean that the product is counterfeit. It means that the NFC tag is genuine, but the packaging has been opened.

This distinction gives companies the flexibility to decide how each combination should be handled.

For example:

  • Valid + sealed: The tag is authentic and the seal remains intact.
  • Valid + open: The tag is authentic, but the product has been opened.
  • Valid + resealed: The tag is authentic, but the seal was opened previously and has since been closed again.
  • Valid + invalid seal reading: The tag is authentic, but the seal condition could not be determined.

Depending on the use case, an opened seal might trigger a warning, prevent a process from continuing, create an alert or simply provide additional information to the customer.

Test TagTamper without physical NFC tags

Companies and developers do not need physical NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper tags to start experimenting with this functionality.

The TAGBASE Sandbox allows users to create virtual NFC tags and test how their applications interact with the TAGBASE platform.

When creating a virtual tag, simply select NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper. When emulating a scan, you can define the condition of the tamper seal and test how the resulting verification should be handled.

This makes it possible to develop and evaluate different workflows, customer messages and system responses before ordering or integrating physical NFC tags.

Integrating seal readings

TAGBASE provides the seal reading through the tamper_status field in its verification data. It can therefore be used in custom applications, dashboards, automated processes and integrations with existing systems.

Because the authentication verdict and seal reading are provided separately, each company retains control over how the information affects its customer experience or internal workflow.

With NTAG 424 DNA TagTamper and TAGBASE, NFC verification goes beyond asking:

“Is this product authentic?”

It can also answer:

“Is it still sealed — and has it ever been opened?”
